Amelie opened three months ago as wine bar and
restaurant on Polk Street, right next door to the playful Bigfoot
Lodge. With the name bringing obvious reminders of
the film, I pictured a charming French café-type wine bar
ala old Paris. This it was not, but when my girlfriends and
I hit Amelie on a weeknight, we found a modern, stylish bar playing
groovy, but non-deafening electronic music, with subdued red tones
and movie theater like rows of seats. Both the bar and restaurant
area in the back are small yet it doesn’t feel cramped. The
vibe is relaxed and not too much of a ‘scene’, though
still hip.
The by-the-glass selections cover two pages. Though the price
range varies, an unlisted flight option is available for $10 from which
you can sample any three wines or champagnes of your choice
from the by-the-glass list. I continued to ask our server if
I could, in fact, choose ANY wines, even the most expensive? Yes,
I could, he replied each time, much to my delight. The pours
were more than generous, making the $10 flight a downright bargain
for sampling wines from around the world. |
