You want to enjoy a casual day with your meat and beer loving
friend over good food and drink. However, your friend’s
idea of fine cuisine is grilled onions added to their burger
or crinkle cut chips. Something fun, unpretentious and affordable
is key… but you still want it to be good!
How about a beer and burger kind of day with blue-collar
flair (Red’s) or beer education and tasting (Anchor
Steam)? As always, even when eating greasy or divey, my motto
is: eat well! Avoid fast food and try one of the great SF
burger spots (*you’ll notice some of these are not
website-type joints so call to confirm hours before going!)
If your friend is also a sports fan, the Bay Area provides
much on that front, including the obvious: AT&T
Park, or the Giants Ballpark (http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com),
where even a person not into sports, such as myself, can
have a memorable afternoon or evening. The setting right
on the Bay is idyllic & though
maybe an obvious choice, it’s a great outing, accompanied
well by beers and burgers pre or post game. If you don't
have to eat in the park, a better alternative to the
stadium’s
ridiculously priced food and $10 glasses of beer (though
they do serve Anchor Steam on tap!) is to fill up before
or after at brand new Pete’s Tavern (128
King Street, between 2nd & 3rd, directly across from
the Ballpark, 415-817-5040), which has comparably
reasonable prices for bar food.

Beer:
Anchor Steam Brewery
| Anchor Steam Brewery (free brewery tour and all you can drink beer!!!) |
|
www.anchorbrewing.com - If you can kidnap your friend on a weekday, take them to San Fran’s legendary Anchor Steam for an impressive history and comprehensive brewery tour. Their popular, tasty beers are all made right here at this location on Potrero Hill (I’m partial to their Liberty Ale). It’s a free tour from friendly, knowledgeable staff and lasts about two hours, including tastings of a range of beers in the onsite tasting room. What a deal! Just make sure to plan ahead as the tour is by reservation only, happens once a day during the week and fills up quickly. The tours I’ve been on have been at 11am so have a lunch spot planned ahead of time as a stomach filled with nothing but beer will need food as soon as possible!

Red's Java House
|
Pier 30 off of Bryant & Embarcadero, 415-777-5626 – This legendary, weathered hut sits on the edge of a dock along the Bay next to a host of moored sailboats, a short walk north from AT&T (Giants) ballpark. Great food it ain’t, but it’s some of the cheapest around, and pitchers of beer cost only $10 (Tip: the mediocre burgers are thin, so if you must get one & want it a reasonable size, get a double burger). The setting is pure blue collar, seaworthy, SF old school. There’s such a charm on a sunny day or at sunset sitting out back in the shadow of the Bay Bridge, chomping on fries and sipping down beers. This is what Otis Redding was talking about: “wasting time…on the dock of the bay”. For only a few dollars, leave your cares behind… [*Note: I’ve heard upsetting rumors this week that Red’s just got hit with an outrageous rent hike from the city and may not be able to afford another month in business after decades as an SF classic. Please call to ensure it’s still open before you go!]

City Beer Store
|
1168 Folsom Street (between 8th & 7th Streets), 415-503-1033; Tue-Sat, noon-9pm; Sun, noon-6pm – If you don’t have time or it’s a weekend or weeknight when you can’t hit the Anchor Steam tour, beer tasting is available for a price at the unique City Beer Store, a tiny SoMa shop featuring bottled beers from around the world and a revolving few on tap. You can try the range of on tap beers at the bar or try a bottle for a small fee before purchasing.

Burgers:
Pearl's Deluxe Burgers
|
708 Post Street (near Jones Street),
415-409-6120; open from 11am-10pm or until 2am on Friday & Saturdays; closed Sundays – Head three blocks west of Union Square for a tiny hole-in-the-wall serving juicy, gratifying burgers and creamy shakes (seasonal flavors abound). I have no idea why this place is not more well-known. It’s delicious, affordable and the perfect alternative to “fast food” (though still ‘fast’). Burger meat is organic for low guilt and complimented by blue cheese (my favorite) or cheese and toppings of your choice, it’s damn satisfying.

Mo's Grill
www.mosgrill.com - Two locations, both serving large, beefy burgers. One location is in the Moscone Center South complex in SoMa, a short walk from the Metreon and BART. The other location is on charming Grant Street in North Beach. The SoMa spot closes early, Grant Street is open later, but both serve great burgers and greasy breakfasts.
